Practicing Strategy

Blackjack PRACTIcING Techniques

Once you have been exposed to Blackjack basic strategy, and understand its importance, you will definitely want to memorize it so that it becomes instinctive to you. This is a must for playing in a "live" casino or even online Blackjack.

After mastering Blackjack basic strategy, you will probably want to expand your skill to include advanced strategy. Blackjack card counting is a perfect compliment to your basic strategy skill. Everything you need to get you on your way to winning casino Blackjack can be found in “Pocket Guide to Winning Blackjack” – including basic strategy charts for 6-deck casino Blackjack, money management, advanced winning strategies and card counting.

Once you have become somewhat familiar with all of this great information, you need to practice – preferably playing Blackjack for free at home!

An excellent tool for practicing winning Blackjack is cue cards. You can make your own very easily. Using a Blackjack basic strategy chart and some small squares of paper, you will write the various Blackjack hand combinations found in the chart.

  1. On one side of the paper write a possible player hand (your hand) as well as the dealer’s up-card.
  2. On the back, write the correct player decision.
  3. Practice your skill by mixing up the cue cards and dealing them to yourself, one at a time and announcing or thinking about the correct player decision (hit, stand, double-down or split).

Here are some examples of cue cards you could easily make for practicing Blackjack basic strategy:

Now, let’s move on to some advanced card counting cue cards. Remember, learn basic strategy first. Then, learn a simple card counting method – practice until you can keep accurate count in a multiple-deck casino Blackjack game (again, practice at home first).

Once you have mastered basic card counting, you can refer to the Blackjack basic strategy deviation chart. There, you will find the most important and profitable scenarios where you would want to deviate from basic strategy, based on the count.

  1. On one side of the paper write a possible player hand (your hand) as well as the dealer’s up-card.
  2. On the back, write the index number that would determine if you should deviate from basic strategy.
  3. Practice your skill by mixing up the cue cards and dealing them to yourself, one at a time and announcing or thinking about the correct player decision (ex: split at +6 or higher, stand at +1 or higher, etc.)

Here is an example of a cue card for practicing Blackjack basic strategy deviations based on the true count, which is the running count divided by number of decks left in the shoe:

Just keep practicing – you will only get better with time and patience. Then, you can use your new Blackjack skill to turn the casino’s advantage in your
favor!
